Culture dates we’re looking forward to in 2019

15 Feb 2019 ARTS & CULTURE

By Nomali Cele

We love a good culture event. But the best cultural events in South Africa always offer a little something extra. It’s not just a film festival or a design conference, these culture events in South Africa present an opportunity to dig a little bigger. Here are a few culture dates we’re looking forward to in 2019.

Culture dates: Design Indaba Festival (27 February – 1 March 2019)

The Design Indaba Festival is one of our favourites on the culture calendar. Concerned with making “A better world through design”, the festival isn’t just about the prettiness of art and design, it’s solutions-driven. If it’s innovative and pushes the envelope, expect to see it at this renown conference. From theatremakers and architects to product designers and creative educators, the Design Indaba Festival is where Africa greets creators.

Culture dates: Cape Town International Jazz Festival (29 and 30 March)

The CTIJF is a jewel on our culture calendar and has become an institution when it comes to cultural events in South Africa. The music extravaganza presents the best of local and international music acts, straddling the balance between Jazz and contemporary sounds.

The Jazz Festival is the place to go to see once-in-a-lifetime concerts and to enjoy special jazz deep cuts.

Culture dates: National Arts Festival (27 June – 7 July 2019)

Formerly known as the Grahamstown Arts Festival, the National Arts Festival has, for over four decades, been a worthy annual pilgrimage for the theatre-lover. The main programme is rooted in performance art and the festival an inviting space for all kinds of productions and troupes.

The National Festival is where you will see life-changing productions, which will either ignite or renew your love for performance art. Other arts disciplines such as visual arts are also part of the festival. The National Arts Festival is also where the winners of the Standard Bank Young Artist of the year award are announced.

Culture dates: Durban International Film Festival (19 – 24 July 2019)

The Durban International Film Festival (DIFF) will be celebrating its 40th anniversary. Over the years, the festival has hosted moving film work from African filmmakers. Of course, with us being in a selectively conservative country, the festival has experienced a few controversies over the years.

Films such as Inxeba, Beauty And The Dogs, Of Good Report and Rafiki have all played at the Festival.

Culture dates: Turbine Art Fair (11 – 14 July 2019)

The RMB Turbine Art Fair is home at this point. Each year, the Turbine Hall in Newtown opens its doors to hundreds of artists and galleries and coaxes Johannesburg citizens to go out and play in the winter and Afropolitans come out in their numbers.
